- What is a cookie?
Today, cookies are used on virtually every website and are, in many cases, necessary to deliver a given service on a website.
A cookie is a small text file that is saved on a user’s IT device (PC, tablet, smartphone etc.) so that the device can be recognised. Among other uses, cookies can be set to prepare statistics about a user’s use of a website in order to optimize the page content. A cookie is a passive file and cannot thus collect data from the user’s computer or spread computer viruses or other harmful software. Some cookies are placed by parties (known as 3rd parties) other than those listed in the address bar (the URL) of your browser. This may be general content but can also include, e.g. analytics tools or embedded comment fields. This means that cookies are stored by other parties than those who own the website.
Some cookies are only stored on the user’s IT equipment for the time the user has the browser open (session cookies). Other cookies are stored for longer periods (persistent cookies). When a user re-visits a website, session cookies will be placed on their device once again while persistent cookies are usually renewed.

- Why do we inform about cookies?
